If you haven’t noticed on Twitter, Instagram or even previous posts about snowboarding I spent three amazing weeks in the Italian Alps. Nicco and I spent New Years in Sestriere and decided to stay and work from our ‘home office’ in the sky. It has been weird adjusting to Florence after feeling so at home up there in the middle of nowhere.
10 reasons why I miss le Alpi (the Alps)
- Silence. I came back realizing that there were no ambulances or city buses toting around town and not very many cars.
- Friendly. No pushing like in Florence… ok, maybe a little pushing in line to get on the ski lift.
- Snow. I don’t see the point of being cold unless there’s snow.
- Snowboarding. No explanation needed.
- Sunsets. I could actually see the sun go down and all of its colors. In Florence, I’m surrounded more by buildings making it impossible to see a perfect sunset every night.
- Close quarters. Nicco and I shared about 500 sq.ft./45 sq.m. of space 24/7 and we actually enjoyed it!
- Tap water. Most crisp and delicious water ever! No smell of chlorine like in Florence.
- Moon boots. I left my pair in our apartment, since I would look ridiculous walking around in them in Florence where there’s no snow.
- Barabba. Our favorite spot to hang out. The bartenders are amazing and the restaurant is the best in town. They remembered us from last year and served us drinks on the house on our last night.
- Mountains. I feel at peace and at home when surrounded by mountains. It’s hard to explain, but I feel like my heart and mind work best at high altitudes.
I was going to add typical food in the Alps to the list, but realized that you can find almost anything in Florence. We eat well enough in Florence as it is, according to my lack of diet restrictions. Also, the above 10 reasons really made it extra special!

Beautiful photos, my husband has just come back from a ski trip in the Alps and it looked gorgeous! Hopefully going together soon (I remember to pack some moon boots!) 🙂

Yes, the Alps are spectacular! There is nothing like skiing a new mountain, looking behind you and seeing a whole other range that goes on forever. And the food isn’t too bad! 🙂
Gorgeous! Is it expensive in Piedmont compared to Florence?
I think that Florence is one of the most expensive cities ever. Caffè is still €1 up here and I base cost on coffee prices, lol. Drinks are the same or cheaper and there is a lot to do in Torino, which is an hour train ride from my place. Torino is more cosmopolitan, clean (no dog poop!), modern museums (like Prato) and great shopping unlike Florence. As Nicco says, the more north, the more normal. Have you been up here yet Whitney? We can meet in Torino next month and tour around!
